I was demonstrating a process which uses metaphor when a student asked if they could put all the positive qualities in their life into a large pearl held in their hand.  (I said ‘yes’). As the number of qualities increased, the pearl seemed to get increasingly heavy, so they asked if they could put it in a box and put that box on a table.  (I said ‘yes’ to both)

Afterthe process was complete, I pointed out that it was strange but usual for clients to ask permission to alter their metaphors in this way. I also added that I was infinitely generous with metaphors and would happily allow a truck load of pearls!
