           NLP for Personal Development

An interview with Robert Steinhouse, the founder and co-trainer of NLP School Europe.

Q: What will NLP do for my personal life?

A: NLP actually changes the way people respond, and that change can be easy and quick.

NLP provides specific techniques which actually change how you behave instinctively in stressful situations. People are often delighted that this actually works (and so are family and colleagues!)

Often people find that other methods of change explain why they behave the way they do; after NLP, people manage to find a way to change so they respond the way they want to in important situations.

Q: So have you ‘written off’ other psychology and self-help?

A: No, not at all. I remain very keen on philosophy and psychology and believe it is important to understand the ‘why we behave’ as well as the ‘how to change behaviour.” I also believe both are integrally connected.

However, it is frustrating to learn more and more about what motivates behaviour without the technology NLP provides to actually change it. NLP training is more than simply a change technology, it also summarises many of the key principles in psychology into a clear system to understand how people actually work.

Q: Does NLP have wider benefits than just changing how we respond?

A: Yes. We live in a time when there is much confusion in how to lead our lives, be it our roles in work, with family, friends, our health, development and how it simply feels to be us on a day to day, moment to moment basis.

NLP focuses on process, not content, so it does not provide any answers to the “big questions.” It does, however, allow people to feel comfortable without having all the answers and be happy to simply explore.

This is the reason I believe that NLP has become so popular. It firstly provides tools to change so we can be happier and more effective in our lives. It also provides a framework to question our world in a way that leaves us at a greater level of comfort and curiosity as to what is possible, rather than fear and confusion for what we know deep down is never possible.

Life is not a certain ride, but wherever it takes us, NLP can teach us how to enjoy the journey and how to adapt to make it bearable when the going gets tough.

Q: Tell me three things that are different about your NLP training courses?

A: NLP is a broad school and our NLP training includes approaches from other disciplines to make it more effective.
  1. Visualisation and Meditation

We teach visualisation and meditation patterns so people can quickly learn to use these on their own. The benefit of visualisations is firstly to find a way to quickly relax and make use of our body’s natural calming systems. This can be essential to gain refreshment when we have little time to rest. It is also an important capability to learn to calm down and be aware of one’s internal state. It is also essential to be able to quiet internal dialogue (or self talking) to make yourself ready to use the NLP change processes.

  2. A Working Understanding of Psycho-Dynamics

The work of Freud was simplified and developed further in the 1950’s and 60's by Canadian psychologist Eric Berne in his field Transactional Analysis (TA). In many ways TA was one of the first popular forms of self help, with well known books such as “I’m OK, You’re OK” and “Games People Play.”

By teaching these TA models (how people sometimes behave as a child, adult or parent,) and combining them with the power of NLP, people get a greater understanding of why people behave the way they do. Also, once people understand this model, it can truly help in keeping calm and resourceful in life’s most important relationships.

  3. A Rigorous Approach to Mind and Body

In NLP we say “mind and body are one system.” However, our society values the mind foremost, with schooling focusing on how to logically process information. People are often very focused and concerned about their career and financial planning. At the same time they see their body as a vehicle to have fun and spend that hard earned money.

The reality is that all big decisions are based on both; we do not get married, choose whether we will work with a certain boss or organisation, have friends or choose where we live based purely on cold logic.

NLP training teaches people how to consciously become aware of the information the body is trying to convey.

The most happy and successful people seem to be aligned between their mind and body, this need not be an accident any longer and we can learn to understand and listen to what is truly important to us and those we care for.
